In the mid-1970s the US Department of Defense launched a tender for the design of a standard programming language. Four teams, color-coded for the sake of establishing a level-playing field, made it to the second round. Hoare and Wirth had consulted for the “Yellow” proposal, which lost to Jean Ichbiah’s “Green” design. One more round remained, involving Green as well as the Red design. I was at that point host to a little twist in the story. I organized a summer school on programming – which turned out to be a memorable event, taking place in July 1978, with three lecturers: Hoare, Barry Boehm (their families became very close on that occasion, for years to come) and Jean-Raymond Abrial. We held a preparation meeting in the preceding Spring, in March I think, with a dinner in an excellent Paris restaurant.
